  • CACUBO '07
David Kadamus, Principal of Sightlines will be presenting along with John Collins of the Illinois Institute of Technology, "Academic Space Utilization - Separating Fact From Fiction." IIT worked with Sightlines that resulted in a process that provided definition to classroom conditions, their usage and their potential for renovation. Additionally Sightlines worked with other AITU schools (Association of Independent Technical Universities) to define best practices in lab design. These two efforts resulted in a plan that illustrated tremendous opportunity to improve the utilization of existing spaces. In addition, the lab analysis showed that many of IIT’s labs were of the right size but wrong configuration. In combination both analytical efforts defined ways to re-adapt existing spaces in lieu of high cost new construction. From this session, participants will learn about the analytical processes taken, the presentation of information, the best practices uncovered, and the plan that resulted from this work.

In a period of tightening institutional resources, colleges and universities are still under pressure to increase programs, grow financial aid, and expand campus’ reputation. To accomplish some of these strategic goals, many institutions are turning to their most valuable assets – their facilities. From this session, participants will learn about the “art and science” of creating a facilities investment plan. Completing campus assessments and project estimates are just the beginning phases. By solidifying campus constituencies, and gaining support for an investment plan within the context of institutional mission, a sustainable initiative can be accomplished. See how two universities have developed long term facilities plans, gained campus support, and used comparative benchmarking to shape their future.
